From Solid Cat: 80 - Foodies
Naan bread
or as some might call it: Indian flat bread

Ingredients
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic (optional)
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

    Directions
    1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, until frothy. Stir in sugar, milk, egg, salt, and enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on a lightly floured surface, or until smooth. Place dough in a well oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise. Let it rise 1 hour, until the dough has doubled in volume.

    2. Punch down dough, and knead in garlic. Pinch off small handfuls of dough about the size of a golf ball. Roll into balls, and place on a tray. Cover with a towel, and allow to rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

    3. During the second rising, preheat grill to high heat.

    4. At grill side, roll one ball of dough out into a thin circle. Lightly oil grill. Place dough on grill, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until puffy and lightly browned. Brush uncooked side with butter, and turn over. Brush cooked side with butter, and cook until browned, another 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from grill, and continue the process until all the naan has been prepared.

SHAKE REVIEW: Portillo's Chocolate Cake Shake
one piece of chocolate cake + ice cream + blender = GO

    Val's Take:
Tasted like the cakes leftovers at the bottom of a bowl when you have cake and ice cream.

    D-mo's Take:
Tasted and felt like I was drinking liquified chocolate cake. Not enough ice cream.

Review Verdict: (on a scale of 1-4 scoops)
    1 1/2 SCOOPS!

From Solid Cat: 76 - Fo Shizzle
    Date Sweets
from the "Traveling the Silk Road" exhibit

    Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 cups pitted chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup toasted flour or crushed cookie (graham crackers may be used)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground fennel seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 1/2 cups nuts (chef's choice)

    Directions
    1. In a heavy frying pan, melt butter on medium heat.

    2. Mash in dates with the back of a wooden spoon. If dates are dry and hard to mash, add a little hot water to soften them.

    3. While mashing, gradually sprinkle in crushed cookie, cardamom, fennel, and coriander (total time for this step: 7-10 minutes).

    4. Spread the mixture of a flat tray or plate, about 1/2 inch thick Press nuts well onto surface. When cool, cut into small squares and serve.

    2. Whisk the cream until stiff peaks form, and fold (most, not all) into the egg mixture.

    3. Freeze the mixture in individuals servings or a large single dish. Leave to stand in the freezer for at least 4 hours.

COOKIE REVIEW: Trader Joe's Kona Coffee Creamy Half-Dipped Shortbread Cookies
    Dave brought us goodies

    Val's Take:
Coffee-tastic! The aftertaste is like I just had a shot of coffee with a lot of sugar. Now I wish I hadn't tried these because I'm going to want them all the time.

    Dave's Take:
It does taste like Kona coffee. Like solidified coffee. I'd buy'em again

    D-mo's Take:
I don't like it, but I don't like coffee. If you like coffee, let alone love it, this will be a treat for you.

Review Verdict: (on a scale of 1-4 cookies)
    3 1/2 COOKIES!

From Solid Cat: 71 - with Special Guest, Big Daddy Dave
CHIP REVIEW: Pringles Cinnamon & Sugar
    a sweet chip?

    Val's Take:
Reminds me of tortillas fried and covered in sugar. I like that it's not overly sweet.

    Dave's Take:
I like'em. They are clearly Pringles, and they don't even taste that sugary. Not sweet enough.

    D-mo's Take:
Feels like a dessert from El Torito, like the shell on fried ice cream, so these are probably great with ice cream. Not bad, but I do wish they were sweeter.

Review Verdict: (on a scale of 1-4 chips)
    2 1/2 CHIPS!
